Bunkbeds

For the past few days, Steve has been building the boys' bunkbeds. This is the last of the "required" items to have on the bus until we can actually camp in it. It still needs storage compartments, paint, window tinting, heat but the sleeping/eating/living arrangements are now complete. This endeavor took longer than expected because he had a few different issues to deal with it. The first order of business is that he didn't want it to be bulky. When we bought the bus it came with a clunky 2x4 bunkbed that took up a lot of space see photo). He wanted this to be slimmed down. He ended up taking apart an oak TV stand we had. He also had to deal with insulating one of the water tanks that lives underneath. We had read on Living in Luna that they sweat once you get the heat cranked inside those things. There were also some plumbing issues because he had to work around our existing plumbing. This of course required a trip to Home Depot for new elbows, etc. We wanted to build them like berths on a train. Eventually there will be a curtain that closes it off from light. The kids want to paint the walls themselves with acrylics and want me to paint their names inside. Eventually I'll get to that! Steve lastly will build a storage compartment underneath for toys and a desk next to the berths covering the other water tank. So, these bunkbeds were made from an oak TV stand, playwood from a tear off roof, masonite from Rachel and Nathan's kitchen remodel and vinyl glue that came with our house when we bought it. Cost, $0. Oh, the pads for the beds came with the bus. Thanks Connie.

  1. Hey, I'm a fellow skoolie living in Portland, and I found you via some old posts at skoolie.net. I know a few others around the area, and I'm going to be opening a free store soon. I've been carving my bus lifestyle the exact same way as you: everything for free.
